BumaStemra and Vollou Launch Partnership for App-Based Setlist Registration

Properly registering and distributing royalties for DJ performances has been a long-standing challenge. To improve this process, BumaStemra is partnering with Vollou. This collaboration focuses on using automated setlist recognition to ensure that played music is recorded more accurately and that royalties are distributed fairly.

Challenges in Royalty Distribution

Traditionally, DJs submit their setlists manually, which can be a time-consuming process. As a result, some rights holders may not receive the royalties they are entitled to. Given the global nature of electronic music, with DJs performing across multiple continents each week, there is a growing need for a more accurate and scalable solution.

Automated Setlist Registration for DJs

Vollou offers an app-based technology that captures and registers tracks played during performances in real-time. This technology is now being used in collaboration with leading BumaStemra-affiliated DJs, including Martin Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Hardwell, and Afrojack. The partnership will be further expanded to a larger group of DJs to implement and demonstrate the effectiveness and benefits of this technology in practice.

Benefits of Automated Recognition

This technology can contribute to a more transparent and efficient royalty distribution system. Key advantages include:

  • Greater Accuracy in Royalty Payments – Automated tracking minimizes errors and ensures that the correct rights holders receive their royalties.
  • Faster Processing and Payments – Manual reporting often causes delays. With real-time data, royalty distribution can be handled more quickly and efficiently.
  • Scalability – Unlike systems that rely on hardware installations in clubs or festivals, this app-based technology is globally applicable and independent of venue infrastructure.

Innovation in Royalty Registration

The partnership between BumaStemra and Vollou aligns with broader developments in the music industry, where technology is increasingly being used to create a fairer and more efficient royalty system. BumaStemra continues to explore new ways to improve rights management and better meet the needs of music creators.
