BumaStemra expands AI detection to catalog level

BumaStemra is expanding its pilot for AI detection in musical works. After an initial phase focused on individual work registrations, the next phase will also include publishers and their catalog submissions in the analysis.

This expansion comes at a time when the impact of AI in the music sector is rapidly increasing. For example, music streaming service Deezer reported that more than one third of music submitted daily is AI-generated. Around 80% of the streams of these works are, according to Deezer, fraudulent and are excluded from royalty payments. This highlights the importance of reliable detection and greater transparency in the sector.

From pilot to further development

BumaStemra has carried out a pilot together with technology partners to investigate whether a work may be (fully) AI-generated. Systems were tested that assign a confidence score per work. Early results show that some AI platforms are already highly recognizable. These insights are helping to further shape AI policy.

The existing pilot, which focuses on authors and composers, will be expanded to include publishers and their catalogs, broadening the analysis. This will create a more complete picture of the origin and authenticity of works and provide better insight into the overall use of generative AI in works submitted to BumaStemra. This will help address major issues in time and prevent payments being made for non-copyrighted works, which would otherwise come at the expense of real creators’ income.
