Below are the other options BumaStemra offers to help you manage a part of your rights.
Music in user generated content on online platforms
You can manage some of your rights yourself in the ‘Music in User Generated Content’ category. This concerns music that is used in content on online platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. When music is incorporated into video content, this is called synchronisation (synchronisation right).
This option can be interesting if you make library repertoire (stock music) or design music. Below you will find more information about this flexible management option.
Manage music in user generated content yourself, what does that mean?
If your music is featured in a video on an online platform, you have the option to negotiate a fee with the content creator for the first recording.
- If you choose to allow the video featuring your music to be used on digital platforms, you will not receive any additional You can indicate on the platform that you agree to this free use which is referred to as whitelisting. The advertising revenue will then go entirely to the creator of the content.
- Another possibility is that you do want to receive additional compensation for any further In that case, you don’t have to take any action. BumaStemra charges the platform for all uses that are not covered by additional agreements and which have not been whitelisted by you. BumaStemra distributes this money in the usual way. Which BumaStemra conditions do you have to fulfil?
If you want to manage your own rights for music in user generated content, a number of conditions apply. In short:
- You must own the music 100%, including for performance rights, mechanical rights and master rights.
- This option only applies to music in user generated content on online platforms, not to music used in commercials or on radio and TV.
- You are responsible for the agreements you make and for any whitelists on online platforms.

Licences for non-commercial use (Creative Commons)
As a music creator, you can have your work licensed under a Creative Commons licence. This applies to non-commercial use: music use where you do not make a profit. For example, if you make adverts for your music that people don’t have to pay for.
Through Creative Commons, you can use your music yourself in non-commercial situations, for example for adverts. BumaStemra is still responsible for the music for which you receive remuneration, such as when your music is played on the radio.
If you use the Creative Commons licence, you are still subject to the terms and conditions for all BumaStemra members. You can find the terms and conditions here (in Dutch).

Own music on own website
Do you have your own website and want to showcase your music there? You can also exclude that from exploitation by BumaStemra. This means you won’t have to pay for using your own music.
If you want to use the ‘Own music on own website’ licence, please email online@bumastemra.nl stating ‘Own music on own website’ with your name, your relationship number and the URLs of your website(s) which you want to use music.
Own Work under Own Management scheme
Stemra offers its affiliated authors the opportunity to make use of the Own Work under Own Management scheme. This scheme makes it possible to record your own work on a sound carrier for promotional purposes. If you are not the sole rightsholder of the musical works, you will need the prior written consent of the other rightsholders (including the music publisher) to use the music for this scheme.
It is also possible to jointly apply for the scheme as a band or music group whose members are affiliated with Stemra.
Under this scheme, no mechanical reproduction costs will be charged if you record your own work on your own sound carrier for this product. You only pay the administration fee of € 50 excluding VAT per application.
