Update TaskForce AI: Plans are in place, now let’s get going

Licentie Update TaskForce AI: Plans are in place, now let’s get going

Conversations about licences

We are in discussion with parties that are considering using AI music. All our conversations are based on the principles that we previously published.

In summary:

  • We aim to achieve a sustainable and ethical balance between the rights of creators and publishers and the ambitions of AI industry players
  • It is essential that creators and publishers, or their representatives, can determine where and how their works are used for AI training purposes
  • Full disclosure is needed about the music used and the money earned from it
  • Creators and authors deserve fair remuneration for all uses of their work, not just for training purposes

Monitoring robustness of new EU AI Act

The European AI Act came into force on 1 August. This includes a requirement for companies to be transparent about the training data used.  We will closely monitor the compliance of parties using music for AI training purposes so that we can assess the effectiveness of the AI act and identify areas where we may need to lobby for improvements in the long term.

Events to promote AI network and engagement

We have two upcoming events with a focus on AI. These events will provide a platform for sharing insights and gathering valuable feedback.

  • On 2 December 2024, BumaStemra, NVPI Muziek and Sena are organising the ‘AI & the music industry’ conference at the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision in Hilversum. This will be a unique opportunity for all our members to share knowledge, get inspired, explore trends, tackle challenges and network. The exact location and times will be announced later.
  • BumaStemra is hosting a private AI event on 15 October to discuss the question ‘How can BumaStemra use the developments in AI to create value for its members, now and in the future?’. The event will bring together our Supervisory Board (RvT), Council of Rights Owners (RvR), Management Board (BvB) and Works Council.

What do you think?

The impact of AI is huge. We’re looking for a good balance where we respond to the opportunities offered by AI, but on fair terms. There are different views on how BumaStemra should deal with this. With more than 40,000 members and such an important issue at hand, it’s understandable to have some differing perspectives. That’s why we really want to hear your voice! What do you think we are doing well, and where can we improve? Your feedback and input are incredibly important to us! Please contact us with your thoughts.
